I don’t get up at 5 am. Let’s be real. I don’t do a lot of things that are touted as the path to success.

And that bosses is the damn point of being the boss. It’s a luxury and a privilege that we even have these choices.
I’ve learned how very hard it can feel good enough, let alone successful when you’re buying into the hype and resenting every minute of it.
So as we launch into this new year I’m embracing the luxury of these choices and working to understand the science of habits.
I’m focusing on not just starting but continuing and I’m excited to see what happens.

I’ve noticed something more and more online. I don’t know if it’s our callout culture or simply a lack of personal responsibility, but I see more and more instances where people are blaming “bad advice” for what’s going on in their business.

Let me be clear. Over the years I’ve been given some downright terrible business advice that’s cost me thousands. I’ve been coached to do things that drove me to my breaking point.

So I know exactly how it feels to implement counsel you get from a third party in your business and have it be all wrong for you. Or worse yet, an epic fail.

It’s frustrating and seriously stressful. You feel like a failure. Or like you’re not good enough.

But here’s the thing. In every single instance, I was the one who decided to follow that advice.

I was the one who made the final call. I was the one who said yes when both my heart and head were saying no. When I was ignoring my intuition and deciding that this just had to be done.

Those decisions cost me dearly in the form of thousands of dollars and in literal months of my life invested with no return.

It would be easy to blame the people who guided me in that direction. And that’s what I’m seeing a lot of online, with not-so-thinly-veiled stories about the time a coach or consultant did someone wrong.

When you play the blame game, you’re giving away your agency in that decision, and it’s extremely hard to learn from it when you’re unwilling to own it.

Taking personal responsibility for those bad decisions and their aftermath, that’s what gives you back your power. That’s what helps you boss up and make sure you don’t ignore your gut or greenlight the thing you’re being told is the answer when you know it's a downright terrible idea.

As we wrap up 2019, I’m celebrating 10 years of successes, and looking at the role I’ve played in my epic fails in the last decade. Interestingly, each of those big old business failures, led to pivotal decisions about how I'd do business in the future. Decisions which directly lead to the wins I'm celebrating.
